Kinja'd!!!

Still going to the dealership tomorrow after class. I topped off the expansion tank to right at the max line on Thursday, this is how it looks this afternoon, now between max and min. A light head gasket failure is likely, bummer.

Bad News: Head gasket

Good News: I can limp it to class and the dealership tomorrow morning

Kind of confused, did you label the photos incorrectly? Coolant level is higher 3 days later?

I think he was using the Thursday picture to illustrate the lowest point it was at, then saying he filled it after that and showing how much it dropped between then and now.

Thursday was the lowest point. Sunday is where it is after I topped it off on Thursday.

Unless a catback and lowering springs can cause such a failure amirite?

I don’t know if you’ve read into it any, but some RS owners are seeing issues with head gaskets. With your tune you are right in the same ballpark as they are, and these 2.3s are already very high strung coming from Ford.

I have been looking at some of those threads recently. I do enjoy a high strung motor, but this is a bit much far too soon.

Are you certain it’s not a slow leak from somewhere else? Does the coolant smell like exhaust? Does the oil show any signs of coolant? Exhaust smell like delicious syrup*?

*I don’t know if red smells as tasty as universal green stuff

Coolant smells sweet. Normal exhaust smells like not that. The same smell from the coolant expansion tank is the one I get from the exhaust on cold starts; a sweet maple syrup smell.

The oil doesn’t show signs, but it could such a small leak that there isn’t enough coolant getting into the oil to show the milkshake signs. It could increase if not taken care of and then the milkshake will be noticeable. I might’ve caught it early enough.

Could be an external leak too. Boost can lift the head a bit causing a bit of weeping. If the head gasket is gakked, rebuild the top end with some ARP head studs and send it.

If the oil isn’t milkshaky you should be OK as far as internal engine systems go.

You and I both know that’s not entirely feasible time-wise with a daily driver; as awesome of a plan that could be.

Man I was hoping and wishing that this wasn’t true.

Unless you have a puddle under your car, yeah there’s a problem, a way to early in it’s life problem.

If it has to go in for non-warranty service, upgrade the fasteners. even if they agree to fix it under warranty, if your service adviser is mod friendly, ask what would happen if you provided some ARP head studs?

Not a bad suggestion.
